In-House vs. Franchise Countertop Companies: What Homeowners Should Know
In This Article

When you shop for new countertops in the Atlanta area, you will meet two kinds of companies: in-house companies and franchise companies. Both can deliver a beautiful kitchen or bath. The difference is in how each one handles sales, fabrication, installation, and service. Knowing how a company is set up helps you ask better questions and know what to expect, whichever one you choose.

What “In-House” and “Franchise” Can Mean

An in-house countertop company usually handles the main steps of a project itself: helping you choose a material, taking template measurements, cutting and finishing the stone in its own shop, and installing it with its own crews. The same company is involved from your first visit to the final walkthrough.

A franchise countertop company is a locally owned business that operates under a regional or national brand. It uses that brand’s name, systems, and support. How the work is divided varies from one franchise to the next. Some fabricate in their own local shop, and some coordinate fabrication or installation with partner companies.

Plenty of companies sit somewhere in between, so the label matters less than the details. Different companies structure fabrication, installation, sales, and service differently. The useful question is not which model is better, but who does each step of your project.

Why the Distinction Matters

Communication

Ask who your main contact will be from slab selection to installation. Some companies keep one person or one team with you the whole way. Others hand you from sales to scheduling to an installer. Either can work well, as long as you know who to call at each stage.

Fabrication and Installation Coordination

A countertop project moves from template measurements to the fabrication shop to the installation crew. When those steps happen within one company, details pass from one team to the next inside the same business. When they involve more than one company, ask how measurements, drawings, and schedules are shared between them.

Showroom Experience

Natural stone varies from slab to slab, so seeing the actual slab can matter as much as seeing a sample. Ask whether you can walk through full slabs and choose the exact one for your home, and whether you can compare colors, finishes, and edge profiles in person.

Accountability

If a seam, an edge, or a cutout needs attention, you want to know who is responsible for making it right. Ask who owns the result: the company that sold the job, the shop that fabricated it, or the crew that installed it.

Service After Install

Countertops last for years, and questions come up after installation. Ask who you should call with a question or an adjustment, and what care your material needs over time.

Questions to Ask Any Countertop Company

These questions work for in-house and franchise companies alike:

  • Who fabricates my countertops, and where is the shop?
  • Who installs them: your own crew or another company?
  • Can I see and choose the exact slab that will go in my home?
  • Who takes the template measurements, and when does that happen in the process?
  • Who is my main point of contact from selection to installation?
  • What is the timeline from template to install?
  • If something needs an adjustment after installation, who do I call?
  • What care does my material need, and does natural stone need sealing?
  • What warranty applies to the material and the installation, and who handles it?
  • Where are your materials sourced?

A good company, in-house or franchise, will be glad to answer every one of these clearly.

How Top South Countertops Works

Top South is an in-house countertop company. We have fabricated countertops in our own Marietta shop for more than 30 years, and our own crews install them. We do not subcontract the installation.

Our sales process is showroom-based. We do not provide in-home estimates before template. Your project starts at our showroom at 830 Pickens Industrial Drive in Marietta, where you can browse materials, colors, finishes, and edges, along with sinks, tile backsplashes, and faucets. Our 82,000 square foot facility includes an indoor slab yard, so you can walk through full slabs and choose the one for your home. You can also browse our stone gallery online before you visit. Materials are sourced globally.

Once you have chosen your slab, we template your space, cut and finish your countertops in our Marietta shop, and install them with our own crews. Template to install is 6 to 7 business days. From slab selection, plan on about 10+ business days.
